Appendix D: Mist Levels
I: Levels 1-10
These lists are not inclusive. You can do things not listed here --
this is just a guideline for degree and scale.
Psionics
Psionics is anything that involves affecting a
character's mind, reading a character's mind, hypnotism, telepathy,
scrying for information or omens (only if the PC has the appropriate
special), or moving inanimate objects around with one's mind. Hostile
psionics against another character must be targeted, and will take the
target's resistance into account.
| Level | Effect |
| 1 | * Cause a transitory wind to blow through a room or street * Give someone the odd sense that they're being watched or followed |
| 2 | * Throw stones with your mind * Make someone feel a moment of emotion as if it's their own, such as fear, confusion, happiness or calm |
| 3 | * Open/close a door or move a piece of furniture with your mind * Transmit a thought or message privately to a receptive person in the same room * Make a person more open to suggestion that doesn't go against their nature |
| 4 | * Project an invisible barrier as hard as ironwood * Read, or shield, a person's unguarded surface thoughts * Create a brief (a few seconds) fully-fleshed hallucination, or a longer hallucination that involves only one sense, inside the mind of a single person. Make them hear, see, smell, etc., something that is not truly there |
| 5 | * Decelerate a deadly projectile before it hits you, or hurl a mid-sized object * Make a person receptive to a suggestion that doesn't go against their nature * Block the receptors in a person's mind for a short time, to make pain stop or prevent them from feeling pleasure or fear |
| 6 | * Constrict a target's windpipe, making it hard to breathe * Probe someone's mind deeply enough to discover if they're being truthful or lying * Make a person more open to suggestion that goes against their nature * Create a brief (just a few seconds) fully-fleshed hallucination, or a longer hallucination that only involves one sense, inside the mind of a handful of nearby people. Make them see, hear, smell, etc. something that is not truly there |
| 7 | * Put a target under your vocal control for several seconds * Take complete control of a simple, nonsentient animal, for a time * Make a person receptive to suggestion that goes against their nature |
| 8 | * Lift that X- wing out of the swamp. Oh yeah, work it, Yoda * Probe someone's mind deeply enough to detect mental damage or influence (detection only) * Paralyze/make a target unconscious for a short time * Make a room full of people feel fear or confusion |
| 9 | * Insert a latent suggestion into a target's mind * Isolate someone from one of their emotions or senses, or scramble their thoughts, for a time * Transmit thoughts or messages back and forth with someone across considerable distance |
| 10 | * Take complete control of a target, your body enters a torpor * Levitate a small building with the power of your mind * Heal a mind of mental damage or influence, or erase any latent suggestions * Force telepathy on an unwilling subject to transmit your thoughts or messages |
Magic
Magic involves controlling the environment around
you, manipulating the mist and your surroundings. Think of it as being
based in traditional 'four elements' magic. You can't create water,
but you can pull the water from the air into a sudden storm. You can
summon your body heat into a massive fireball, or freeze the surface
of a lake with a touch. You can transform one material to another, or
enchant a common object with new properties. Hostile magic against
another player must be targeted, and will take the target's resistance
into account.
| Level | Effect |
| 1 | * Zap someone with static electricity * Freeze or boil a cup of liquid * Curse someone with a minor irritation (itch, sneezes) |
| 2 | * Light a candle without match or flint * Transmit a small area of burn or frostbite with a touch * Disorient someone or deflect an object with a sudden swirl of wind |
| 3 | * Use a small magic missile to attack the darkness * Smash a glass window, mirror or table * Cause a locking mechanism to lock/unlock |
| 4 | * Cause a thick fog to blanket an area * Transform a single existing part of your body, like giving yourself fur, or enhanced eyes for night vision * Transform a base material into something else |
| 5 | * Pull moisture from the air to shoot a stream of water from
your hands * Make an object lighter so you can carry it more easily * Give a weapon an edge that does not dull * Use the elements around you to form a barrier |
| 6 | * Transform yourself by creating a new limb or appendage that you
didn't previously have (wings, a tail, an extra set of arms) * Encourage inorganic matter to spread wildly * Harden your skin to deflect a weapons blow or protect against the elements |
| 7 | * Freeze or boil the surface of a contained body of water (lake, pond) * Magically repair a complex machine, or a building * Curse someone with a powerful effect, or magically poison a blade |
| 8 | * Transform yourself into a bear or hawk (become one in
body, not just appear as one) * Create a directed fireball or lightning bolt of moderate strength * Blow a bolted door open, or blow a hole in a wall with a forced burst of wind |
| 9 | * Transmute an overgrown path into a paved highway * Transform complex organisms into something else * Form a bubble of contained atmosphere so you can travel through hazardous lands safely |
| 10 | * Shoot all-incinerating white flames from your hands * Cause a complex change to local weather (make it snow/rain/become spring-like) * Bring a golem or other form of non-living magical servant to life (Work that broom, Mickey!) |
Imagination
Imagination
encompasses the creation of illusions so believable that they become
real. Spectacular dream-like or cartoon-like effects, such as
flying/long-jumping, surviving falls from great height, making all
your furniture into lime jello, turning day to night, or making things
out of nothing. As a rule of thumb, if it involves hypnosis or causing
hallucination, it's Psionics, but if it involves creating an illusion
or doing something you could likely do in a lucid dream, it's
Imagination.
| Level | Effect |
| 1 | * Make a small quantity (a handful) of any small or granular items. (handful of dirt, coins, gems, sand, salt, etc) * Cause lights to appear in the air and dance at your command * Create a Basic Illusion. |
| 2 | * Make a simple small object larger than a handful
(sturdy bricks for building, or a small figurine or a flower) * Shape the mist into a cup of coffee or a loaf of bread. (Food created with imagination may smell and taste like the real thing, but is in truth a convincing illusion with no nutritive value) * Make people hear sounds (simple music, the growling of an animal, a single spoken word or phrase) |
| 3 | * Jump to superhuman heights * Make a room a little warmer or a little colder * Tie someone up with a roll of ribbon or chains |
| 4 | * Breathe underwater for a short time * Create the illusion of a change in a person's appearance or clothing * Make a mid-sized simple object - (Like a flock of animated crystal butterflies or a thick blanket or a well-balanced sword) |
| 5 | * Float through the air * Make yourself invisible for a short time * Change the composition of objects (make your furniture seem to be made of lime jello) |
| 6 | * Make a cushion of air around someone to survive long falls * Make a large simple object (Like an entire wall, a piece of furniture or a simple vehicle (chariot, sled)) * Create a bag or pouch that can seemingly hold anything |
| 7 | * Teleport yourself several meters * Make a complex tiny object (a clockwork device or a minute, intricate carving or painting) * Call forth an illusory large non-sentient animal to do your bidding |
| 8 | * Make a complex small object (a pistol or a locking box) * Re-arrange a building's interior * Create the illusion of complex sounds (a real-sounding symphony, an extended overheard conversation) |
| 9 | * Create the illusion of a temporary change of season * Make a complex mid-sized object (a wheelchair, a bicycle, a shotgun, a flashing neon sign) * Grant yourself the power of flight, shrink or grow in size |
| 10 | * Create a complex large object (a building on a firm foundation, or a
complex, maneuverable vehicle, or a topiary maze) * Create a believable and life-like full-sensory illusion |
Faith
Faith covers healing or the creation of
life. Mending bones, making forests grow, dispelling poison, creating
water, or otherwise encouraging nature are examples of Faith
effects. So are channeling and unleashing pure holy power against the
undead. Faith is a power of creation only. A level three faith may
create a flower but a level three faith cannot kill one. Faith can
ONLY be used to destroy by draining the life of one living object in
order to transfer it to another. You can't kill a flower with faith,
but you can take in the power or life from it, causing it to
wither.
| Level | Effect |
| 1 | * Make pure water trickle from your fingertips * Heal a scratch or bruise * Fill your belly with the nourishment of food |
| 2 | * Heal a minor injury * Encourage a flower to grow * Detect, and weaken, poison |
| 3 | * Turn wine into water, purify a liquid or tainted food, cure mild poison * Detect injuries under the skin * Heal a sprain or larger surface wound * Give an instant transfusion of a few pints of blood * Regrow a minor digit or body part (finger joint, earlobe) * Set a broken bone |
| 4 | * Summon/Create simple small non-sentient organisms for a brief time (a flock of doves, a swarm of beetles) * Heal a simple fracture * Regrow a limb or extremity |
| 5 | * Temporarily disperse an apparition or turn back an unholy creature * Cure a mild chronic injury * Deep-scan the body for injury |
| 6 | * Call down an impressive divine light or aura of fear around yourself * Cure serious or systemic poison * Cleanse the blood of foreign chemicals or infection |
| 7 | * Encourage plant life to mature or spread wildly, or drain the life from a plant into yourself * Heal life-threatening trauma (stab wound, internal bleeding) * Deep-scan the body for potential / hereditary illness |
| 8 | * Smite a non-sentient undead creature with the power of life * Halt the spread of cancer * Call forth a horde of creeping insects from the earth and mists, or mobilize an army of plants |
| 9 | * Summon/create a non-sentient animal such as a dog or horse * Restore youth considerably * Eradicate cancer or life-threatening illness from the body |
| 10 | * Raise a zombie capable of following simple commands * Revive someone who has just died. This won't work if they're already cold/mangled, and they could die again if you haven't stopped their bleeding or otherwise accounted for their cause of death |
